For Assembly District 29
April Mastroluca is nearly a native of Las Vegas since her parents brought her to the valley when just 6-months old. She has close ties to the casino industry through her father’s 40-years in industry and her step mother retiring from the industry just a few years ago. The East side of Las Vegas was home as she grew up, near Stewart and Lamb, where she and her family made many adventures out of attending traditional Las Vegas events like Helldorado and the JC State Fair.
Dan and April Mastroluca have been married since 1992 and they have lived in Henderson since 1998. Five years ago, Dan’s aunt came to Southern Nevada to live with them and this experience has opened April’s eyes to the needs of the elderly in our community. Dan’s aunt is now 83 years old and the family often finds themselves looking for information regarding transportation, access to services and other issues that affect our senior population.
Education
While growing up in the Las Vegas Valley, April enjoyed her time in the Clark County School District (CCSD). She attended CC Ronnow and Walter Long Elementary Schools, the Madison Sixth Grade Center, Dell H. Robison Middle School, and graduated from Eldorado High. Education is a passion for their family, so April’s husband Dan Mastroluca and she have always been heavily engaged in their children’s education. They have volunteered many hours in the PTA programs, attended music concerts at schools and the Las Vegas Youth Orchestra, and watched sporting events in football, baseball, and tennis. April’s family firmly believes in the education of children, so their two children attend local schools. Their daughter Kelsey is finishing her freshman year at Green Valley High School, and their son Nick is finishing sixth grade at Thurman White Middle School.
Employment
Currently, April is a paid staff member of the National PTA. She works with state and local PTA units to increase the participation of parents and teachers, and with community leaders to support schools and school programs. Building these relationships is vital to increasing parental involvement in the schools and their PTA programs. April is proud to be a part in improving education through her work efforts.
After working for KVVU Fox 5 News for three years, April has spent the past six years doing what she loves best by working with non-profit organizations to help make life better for real people. Her past work experience has included working with the American Red Cross and the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth. During her time with the American Red Cross April was the director of financial development, where she developed and organized fundraising events for the Southern Nevada Chapter. While working for the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth as the coordinator for the Safe Place Program she was tireless in her effort to provide safe locations for children who feel they have nowhere to go. Through working with local firefighters, April’s team was able to add 39 additional locations to the Safe Place program to enhance more than 200 Terrible Herbst locations where kids can find assistance to prevent them from running away from home and living on the streets of Southern Nevada.
Making a Difference
April believes that as busy as we all are, it is important to make a difference by volunteering in community efforts. In addition to being involved in her children’s activities April has volunteered in the following community efforts:
• The Junior League of Las Vegas, where she was especially excited about conducting events that spotlighted the difficulties of children aging out of the Foster Care Program in both Clark and Washoe counties.
• Getting the “Safe Haven” law passed unanimously by the Nevada State Legislature in 2001, which provides legislation to keep mothers from abandoning their babies in unsafe places by allowing them to legally leave their newborns at fire stations, police stations, and hospitals.
• She wrote and produced a public service announcement to educate Nevadans about the Safe Haven law and created a task force among emergency service personnel and the Junior League to ensure everyone was aware of how the law would affect them.
During the past four legislative sessions , April has been a volunteer advocate for improving education and protecting our children. During these four years, April developed a hands-on approach to bringing about change in Carson City, working to organize parents and child advocates to testify in Carson City and to contact their legislators.
April and her family are involved in their church. Along with attending services regularly, the whole family volunteers. The kids and April volunteer in the church’s children’s ministry, while her husband volunteers in the video production ministry.
